Sustainability

As a company 100% dedicated to organic coffee, we exist only to support the environment. This is the reason we got into the organic coffee business in the first place. And this is the reason we continue to push the ‘green’ envelope in all we do; from big picture stuff like buying and selling to running our day to day business.

To re-iterate, we are all-organic. We don’t just dabble in organics, it is all we do. And if you have ever had the pleasure of visiting a coffee origin, you will know that organic growing is the apogee of environmental excellence.

Our roasting plant also runs completely on renewable energy, including our electricity that is wind generated. We do so with offsets that allow us to use the national grid to purchase wind from the Southwestern states to power our facility. (We are an EPA Greenpower Partner).

We were the first coffee company to come to market with a one-way valve bag that contains renewable resources. These valve bags contain PLA, a corn based material used in packaging that does not come into contact with the product and allows us to deliver fresh coffee in a more sustainable manner.

Our paper ‘to go’ cups are completely compostable. Not only that, they look pretty darn sharp! (Nice design Jessica!).

These are just a few of the many, many small and large decisions we make to do our part. (I have two recycled aluminum clipboards on my desk!). Some other include:

~We make our coffee ‘chaff’ (a roasting byproduct that is FANTASTIC to compost) available for free to local organic farmers.

~We support charities small and large with a focus on caring for and preserving wild space; helping children in need, and of course our work in coffee communities. (See coffee sourcing page).

~When we print (which we do less and less of); we use recycled paper and soy-based inks.

~Our office and roasting plant continues to go through minor improvements. As we do so, we adhere to LEED principles. We hope one day to gain LEED certification, and these small changes are steps in that direction.

~The cleaners and maintenance we perform on a daily basis are completely green and approved by our third-party certifiers to do the job they need to do.

So as you can see, sustainability is something we take very seriously. Not just in our overall support for organic coffee; but in everything we do.
