Charity Partner for this Project

Jim's Organic Coffee has found an incredible charity partner in Costa Foundation, an international charity with the mission to provide the opportunity for safe, quality education in coffee growing communities around the world.

Previously, we have worked with Costa Foundation in Honduras and Uganda, but we are now sponsoring a project in Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia, where we source amazing organic coffee for our Limited Edition blends and single origins.

Why Yirgacheffe

While Yirgacheffe is globally renowned for its specialty coffee supply, the majority of the people in the district are living in poverty. Many rural families cannot afford to send their children to school when they could be helping the family to earn much-needed money. Those that can face obstacles of transportation, unsafe and unsanitary buildings, and limited resources and teachers.

The Adame Yirgacheffe School

The Costa Foundation built the Adame Yirgacheffe School in 2011, and further modified it in 2019 to serve at full capacity.

Before 2011, a school building existed, but was cramped with up to 90 children per room, mud floors, leaking roofs, no access to sanitation and no furniture. The school had a ranking 54 out of 57 schools. 

That building was demolished and replaced with high quality concrete learning blocks, a library, new sanitation and new furniture and books. The school now has electricity, fresh water harvesting tanks, and 13 teachers.

After the school construction, the school came in 2nd out of 57 schools. This achievement was made possible by the enrollment of highly motivated and well-trained teachers, and renewed enthusiasm from the students and the whole community.

In 2020 and 2021, The Costa Foundation sponsored the building of a secondary school for grades 9-12 in this area. This will continue the education of the children who go through the Adame Yirgacheffe Primary School.

Continuing to Make a Difference

The Costa Foundation's upgrade to these buildings and hiring of teachers have made a huge difference in these students' lives. Now, their school is in need of educational supplies to support their curriculum! Jim's Organic Coffee is proud to sponsor this school by providing funds for reference books and sports equipment.
