Our Costa Rican Coffee: Now Smithsonian Bird Friendly Certified®
We’re excited to announce that a customer favorite, our Costa Rican coffee from Roberto Montero’s La Amistad farm, now holds the official Smithsonian Bird Friendly® certification!
Jim’s Organic Coffee has always been committed to shade-grown, bird-friendly coffee, but this certification takes things to the next level. It adds a trusted, science-based seal of approval that guarantees the farm supports not only high-quality coffee production, but also critical biodiversity and migratory bird habitats.

What Is Smithsonian Bird Friendly® Certification?
Created by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, the Bird Friendly® seal is one of the most rigorous environmental certifications for coffee farms in the world. Farms must meet strict criteria, including:
-
Maintaining a dense, multi-layered canopy of native trees
-
Being certified organic
-
Supporting a rich diversity of plants and wildlife
-
Providing essential migratory bird habitat
It’s a win-win for birds and coffee drinkers: farms protect ecosystems while producing coffee that’s rich in complexity and flavor.
All of Jim’s Coffees Are Shade Grown; And That Matters
Every coffee we roast at Jim’s is shade-grown. Shade-grown coffee mimics a natural rainforest environment, providing homes for native and migratory birds, while also preventing erosion, preserving water resources, and enhancing soil health. Bird Friendly® takes it a step further and now, our Costa Rican offering gives customers another level of confidence in what’s in their cup.
Why It Matters
Migratory birds rely on healthy habitats throughout their annual journeys. Without sustainable farming practices in Latin America, and certifications such as Bird Friendly, millions of birds would lose their winter homes.
