At Home Brewing: Improve Your Coffee Routine

Your Jim’s Organic Coffee Has Arrived—Now What?

There’s nothing better than opening a fresh bag of Jim’s Organic Coffee, knowing that a delicious cup is just minutes away. But how do you make sure your home brew rivals your favorite coffee shop?

With just a little attention to detail, you can bring out the best flavors in your coffee—every single time. Follow these four simple tips for a café-quality cup right from your own kitchen.

1. Grind Fresh for the Best Flavor

One of the most overlooked factors in brewing great coffee is the grind. The texture of your coffee grounds directly impacts how well the flavors are extracted. As a rule of thumb:

Single Cup (Espresso, AeroPress): Fine
Drip Coffee Maker: Medium (Drip)
French Press or Cold Brew: Coarse

If you have a grinder, use it! Freshly ground coffee makes a world of difference. If you don’t, now might be the perfect time to invest in one—you’ll taste the upgrade in every sip.

2. Get the Right Proportions

A common mistake? Using too little coffee. A good starting point is 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water—and if you’re brewing a dark roast, make it a heaping tablespoon since the beans are less dense.

For the perfect barista-level cup, the golden ratio is 1 gram of coffee to 15–18 grams of water. Want to dive deeper into brewing methods? Check out our How to Brew guide.

3. Use Hot Water (But Not Too Hot!)

The secret to unlocking rich, full-bodied coffee? Water temperature. The best extraction happens at 200°F+, just off the boil. That’s why we love brewing with:

🔥 Pour-over (like Chemex)
🔥 French Press
🔥 AeroPress

Most automatic drip machines don’t get hot enough, which can leave your coffee tasting flat. If you use one, make sure it reaches at least 195°F for the best flavor.

4. Keep Your Equipment Clean

You clean your kitchen regularly, but what about your coffee maker? Coffee oils build up over time, leading to bitterness. Here’s how to keep things fresh:

🧼 Daily: Rinse the brew basket and carafe with hot, soapy water.
🧼 Monthly: Run a 50/50 water and white vinegar cycle through your machine. Pause halfway, let it soak, then finish the brew. Follow with two cycles of plain water to remove any vinegar taste.

Level Up Your Home Brewing Game

Looking to take things to the next level? Investing in quality home brewing tools can make your daily coffee ritual even better. Some of our favorites include Fellow Products, Bodum, Chemex, Acaia, and SCA-certified home brewers.

And of course, great coffee starts with great beans.
